Founded in 2020, ESTATELINK was created by President Rashad Benoit, a career professional firefighter. In nearly two decades of service to the City of Los Angeles, it became apparent that most members took extraordinary precautions to protect themselves from the potential dangers of a career in the fire service. From the career’s inherent risks, the rigors of a long career, exposure to countless toxins and substances, to the active lifestyles many members enjoy off duty, most members insure themselves to prevent a potentially devastating financial impact to themselves or their family because of illness, injury or death.
Over a long career, Rashad witnessed many co-workers suffer long term injuries, become ill and some made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the city. In speaking with union leaders, a glaring consistency existed among most cases. While members were insured and protected, the order of their estate was in disarray. Most families had little idea what policies the member had, what those policies covered, which beneficiaries were designated, if they were updated from old information, what benefits they were entitled to, etc. Trusts and Wills were not established or were incomplete or outdated. Many members took out and paid into policies for an entire career and never filed a single claim for any benefits the plan offered. Many forgot they had certain policies entirely.
It was obvious that something was needed to assist in the organization of members insurance policies, estate planning and benefit information to help both the member and their next of kin to easily access vital information for routine upkeep, accessing benefits or in dyer situations, a stress free ally to families in need.
